Girls Friday year review
(Stable owner Harry Keegan and his second in Command Melanie Sykes sit after hours in the stables office, drinking a bottle of whiskey and chatting about stable matters)
Harry: so it's time to talk about where we are as a stable, so let's start with flyweights, how do you think we've done?
Mel: hmm well the successes have certainly been Elizabeth, I mean she went unbeaten in both leagues, 12 fights in the FCBA and 2 in the BBU, leading to her being ranked 4th in the FCBA by Boxing World Organization!
Harry: it's funny, when I started arranging the stable, the mantra "build on youth" was the plan, Elizabeth being 29 when we signed her was not my first idea I'll admit but boy has she shown me something.
I'm of course going to keep giving her ever chance to be a champion, whether that be in the BBU or in the FCBA, she'll become a champion this year and she'll get the biggest cheer around here I feel because she truly she is good person who deserves success.
Mel: same goes for Ivana, she didn't have many fights but beat Kelly Hall and of course proving what we know, she is a perfect match for miss BBU Jenna Louise Coleman.
Harry: true that; I remember signing her and Poppy, both wide eyed with excitement, they really wanted this and Ivana has really shown that she is an arse kicking machine and I expect more from her as this year goes on.
Mel: while that's all go, what do you think about Maria and Maisie this year?
Harry: I dropped the ball on them, Maisie is still learning but she needs constant work, not too much in case she tires out but having 3 fights a year isn't enough, I will do better.
On Maria; well she got a good win against Kara Tointon and over our former fighter Ola, but she is struggling for exposure, again my fault, I'll work harder to get them fights but if by next year we have the same problem, well then we will need a big conversation.
Mel: OK onto bantamweights; I have to say as someone whose known Clara a long time, she got some good scraps but that loss to Elodie Frege and her French title gone annoyed her.
Harry: I like her a lot, great mentor figure in the back, knows she us basically a part time fighter now with younger girls stepping up, if we are honest; this might be her last serious year.
Don't get me wrong, she is tough as nails still, has a hell of a hook on her, but the speed is going and I don't want to see her get railroaded, but that's a conversation for another day.
Mel: well Poppy had an interesting year, she started so well but those two losses really stung her it seems, happily her last fight seems to have put her out her slump.
Harry: again bad management on my part, when she beat Leven Rambin I thought "wow this kid has it all" I built her up for a hiding and sadly it came, I think it's made her stronger though.
It's the same with Olympia, needs more work to stay in top shape and I think that Poppy scare put me off pushing her, that's how stupid I was this year.
Mel: so should I mark you as fired?
Harry: haha I hope not
Mel: how about Taryn, her year hasn't been great, a few big defeats this year and she just doesn't seem able to take what she knows into the ring.
Harry: curse of being a coach, you know I had a fight once in the ring for charity, me and another coach, it looked like two bums who'd never boxed fighting I swear, got a few chuckles though.
Long and the short of it is; while you train others, how can you work on yourself? Your issues? You can't but I can take her under my wing, work her after the gym closes and maybe we can get her back on track, she was a JMD champ after all so she is no duck egg.
Mel: onto lightweight; our biggest success story, I mean I don't think you'll argue that! We have two champions at the same time, the belts sitting at home with Kendall and Alessandra, ironic how it's one of our youngsters and our oldest with the gold.
Harry: not really; they are the two who have had the most opportunities, you know this gym isn't run on one fighter being named the best and kept there or simply giving everyone tomato cans to fight, each girl gets a chance and if they win; they keep moving up, you lose and you are pegged back and the cream rises to the top organically.
Mel: well Kelly, Monika, Jessica and Sara have all had quite years, I know Kelly is the most upset of that group.
Harry: it's an issue I'll need to sort out, I love all those girls but with only so much we can do to promote the girls, it may mean people being cut, a word I hate with a passion but it may save all their careers.
Mel: are you thinking of cutting right now?
Harry: not now; but in 6 months, Maybe sadly we will, I've been thinking deeply on the stable going forwards anyway, of course I want your say in those talks at a later time.
Mel: at least Holly has been another success, this time in the JMDD division.
Harry: I adore that woman, she works hard to train for fights, helps with PR around here and won a title, what's not to love, I warn you Melanie; I might want her to replace you someday
Mel: she can try but she'd have to fight me for it haha.
Harry: haha well your jabs safe, who else could help me run this lot and help with the FNL cards in America.
Mel: thanks babe, hmm. We better discuss the welterweights, Hilary by a large margin is our ace, something I know Michelle is hating right now.
Harry: Hilary is truly outstanding; physically impressive, already been a champion and I see her holding multiple titles, that's how high I rate her.
On Michelle, I know you've had issues with her for years, honestly, this next 12 months is make or break for her, the same with Behati.
She is a good kid but she seems to lack something, maybe a killer instinct or maybe I'm being too harsh, I'll tell you when I get an answer.
Mel: well our BBU scene is strong, Joan is fighting for the welterweight title here at the end of the month, I know she loves Jourdan but has sworn she will do everything to bring home the gold.
Josephine is unbeaten still and I believe could fight anyone in the world and win, you have an ace in the hole with her.
Harry: I hope so, well I guess I can't belly ache can I? We won 4 titles this year in both organizations, hopefully we can keep the titles we have for a long time and win a few new ones to brag about.
Mel: I'll definitely toast to that!
