Hello again,
It's Anna here, your new BBU TV Junior Reporter!
So, the Girls Friday crew enjoyed their second night of boxing action down in Sydney this past weekend. Let's see how the card unfolded and whether my grading system meets a positive response from the girls involved. Thankfully, Emily Atack didn't take part in this card so I don't have to worry about her aching ego for the time being! (winks).
JOAN SMALLS vs TONI COLLETTE
OK, so even Joan admitted this was basically a stay-busy fight during the welterweight title tournament hiatus. She was heavily favored to knock Toni down and well, she didn't raise any eye-brows by doing so! This was an Emily Atack deja-vu performance with one small difference, unlike Isla Fisher, Toni was making her official debut and there was a slight chance she's actually a competitve cougar. Well, that was a very slight chance indeed and Joan made sure that wasn't the case after all.
I have no problems with highly-touted upstars facing allegedly inferior cougars but I'd like to see Joan against Tara Moss in all honesty. Moss looks like the best 40+ fighter coming from the ACB and well, perhaps she will earn herself a fight with Smalls sooner rather than later. The question is, whether Joan becomes the welterweight champion even before that?
Winner's grade: B
CATHERINE TYLDESLEY vs SOPHIE FALKINER
Catherine is probably the most underrated welterweight in the whole of BBU! She's been racking up the numbers since 2011 but never seemed to become one of the divisional elite fighters. That's because she's slightly undersized at 5'7" which is basically a lightweight frame most of the time. But she's a stubborn operator and well, her rack can win her some fans along the way too! (winks). She's survived the Girls Friday roster overhaul and if she keeps winning, she might just earn herself a big Main Event billing in the future (pending Joan Smalls' approval).
Sophie is a cool girl, another cougar but definitely superior to Toni Collette. She hang on until the body shots eventually became too much. But she still didn't deserve the post-fight trashing from Catherine who must have been frustrated more than anything else. I hope she comes back from this disappointement and well, Real View's Suzi Perry sounds like a suitable fighting option from where I'm sitting!
Winner's grade: B+
KELLY GALE vs TABRETT BETHELL
Now we're entering the A-listers, Kelly just made the Playboy cover in America and but for the two defeats to Nadia Forde and Helena Mattsson, she would be miles ahead of Sara Sampaio on the GF lightweight pecking order. Alas that superior schedule simply blew straight into Kelly's face and she was forced to fight the second-tier Aussie unlike Sampaio who got a crack at the top ACB lightweight later on.
Well, I think Kelly will eventually take over the Main Event schedule from Sara as I think she's just a little more feisty despite Sampaio riding the Mediterranean/Hispanic mojo. She pummelled Bethell into a sobbing mess in the end and needed only four rounds to do it! It's clear she wanted to release her anger after those two previous defeats and Bethell just couldn't soak it all up! Oh, and the 14 year difference actually made the difference here too! (winks). This performance deserves an award! (stay tuned).
Winner's grade: A-
MAIN EVENT: SARA SAMPAIO vs KRYSTAL FORSCUTT
Sara got off to a light BBU schedule winning a double-header against Natalie Gumede and let's be honest, Kelly Gale endured a much tougher going during her introduction period at the very same time. But everything evens itself out after a while and Sara got a taste of one of ACB's most fearsome operators in recent years. Krystal Forscutt should be considered for a LW pound-for-pound Top 5 and she had all the answers for Sara's Hispanic temper. Heck, the way she snapped Sampaio's head to send her tumbling down in a heap even gave me a solid neck crank!
But before her ultimate demise, Sara still gave Krystal a lot of trouble and several deep cuts along the way! That was impressive in it's own right and when Sara gains more experience fighting contenders rather than journeywomen like Gumede, she might push Forscutt all the way! Apparently we have a solid feud on our hands here and with Karolina Kurkova camping in America these days - and Jennifer Hawkins looking at the lightweight title shot outright, Sara might just be poised to fill in the blanks soon! The other question remains who's exactly the GF lightweight number one now? Alessandra Ambrosio was always seen as a full-time FCBA project to mirror Kurkova's jump overseas however Jessica Michibata and Monika Pietrasinska are running strong in the division too! I actually think the Girls Friday have the best lightweight roster in the whole of BBU right now! That's not exactly the best news for Sara though given her brutal knockout at the hands of Forscutt here!
Winner's grade: A
