BBU TV exclusive from Cardiff Arena HQ:
Georgie Thompson & Denise van Outen discuss the latest news from the Welterweight Contenders event held in Johannesburg this past Wednesday as the competition heats up to face the current 130 lbs champion Joan Smalls
JOURDAN DUNN vs CAROLINE AUSTIN
Our friends over at Real View have dismissed Caroline as a valuable contenders and we know the Lioness Club gave up a spot for Alex Gerrard to have Caroline featured in this event. She couldn't win any fights back home in Australia in Rounds 1 & 2 but did very well stopping former official challenger Jourdan Dunn in five rounds.
There are several things that need to be looked at in the big picture.
First - Jourdan seems like she peaked in a weak era when Erika Heynatz vacated the title and there was a rag-tag of names who tried to fill the gap. Joan Smalls emerged as the champion but she's also vulnerable because of this. Don't that recent win over Vogue Williams fool ya! Whoever wins the Contenders title will be a favorite to remove Ms Smalls from the throne! It won't be Austin but she can do her future BBU chances no harm by taking part in this event!
Second - the old Beevers heroines are BACK! Alesha Dixon & Samia Ghadie are making noise again and Jourdan Dunn - seemingly the future face of the stable is going back to the back bench! Ouch! She's mentally hampered by this in-house revival and doesn't have that required support to become THE go-to-girl. Denise predicted an 0-5 finish for Dunn and this looks to be spot on!
DOUTZEN KROES vs MELISSA SATTA
This turned out to be a classic come-from-behind victory for Kroes who got decked early in the fifth and given the weight we're at, this was supposed to be the end of her show. You simply don't recover from such a powerful disaster at welter but Ms Kroes actually DID and stormed right back at Melissa who was probably as surprised as anyone here - despite Doutzen's glorious BBU past.
This is another stinker on Melissa's resume who first couldn't handle stablemate Petra Nemcova in the original eliminator bout and now is one loss away from handing the event on a golden plate to Bo Krsmanovic! I still think she has ALL the tools to actually knock Joan Smalls out but first she has to earn the right to face her! It's like curling in Canada, it's easier to become World Champion than a National Champion. This is what plagues Melissa's otherwise impressive BBU tenure so far!
As for Douzten Kroes, we hope she doesn't hear much about Romee Strijd about to take over the Dutch welter thunder later this year. Doutzen is just that few years removes from the intended prime but she still turns heads at 34 so why should we complain about her numbers?
ALICE GOODWIN vs BO KRSMANOVIC
This could have been the premature final unless Melissa Satta does something about Bojana in Round 4 next month! The might of Chimera against the joined venture of Pretty Little Punchers & Vixens / Sirens. Both brunettes provided the true heavy lifting with only one of them poised to go 3-0 after this round. It turned out to be Krsmanovic who simply outslugged Goodwin and send her down with a busted up nose in the seventh. That's bonus money for all the fans that made the long journey to South Africa to witness it!
Bojana has Melissa Satta next and the lacklustre & mentally shattered Jourdan Dunn in Round 5 which could turn into a mercy killing. If Bo beats Melissa, it's all OVER and Joan Smalls can steer her ship onto Balkan waters. Let's make no mistake, Bojana knocked out WTA pros in Ana Ivanovic & Caroline Wozniacki before and nobody has been able to expose her somewhat questionable resistance in this tournament yet! Bojana struggles when she gets HIT and I mean HIT! Caroline Austin didn't have the exprience and Doutzen Kroes didn't have the stamina to outlast her and now Alice followed suit but she gave her a mighty test here. Alas it was not to be...
If I were Joan Smalls I'd be really worried... or just cheer for the former Italian karate champion Satta!
What's your take, Joan? Let us know!
