Michelle Joy Phelps interview with Sirens manager
Michelle: hey guys, this is a very special interview as we welcome the
newest stable to the BBU with their amazing managing here with me
today.
Sirens: Pleased to be here and thank you for having me over.
Michelle: So first question, what drew you to join the BBU?
Sirens: Well, as I learnt more and more about the BBU, the eased format of fights, the vast talent pool and of course the opportunities for fighters to expand their potentials were all driving factors for VIXENs deciding to open up their sister-branch over this side of the Atlantic.
Michelle: Looking over your roster, you have amassed talent from my
home country of America and from around the world, was it difficult to
find this talent or do you have scouts and advisors to help you with
your decisions?
Sirens: We have a very stringent and vigorous selection process here, from open casting calls and receiving applications to medical examinations and physical trials. I won't deny though that we do have certain processes for scouring the more obscure corners of the Internet for potential fighters, deploying scouts to Model Agencies for instance to really get a feel of the international talent pool.
Michelle: did you feel British talent wasn't good enough or was it
simply that these girls were the best and you have to have them?
Sirens: *Laughs* The least think I would do is to diss the British talent pool. *hesitates* It's not so much that British talent wasn't good enough, but close to fully tapped. Call it the good judgement of the existing BBU managers who have already snapped up British fighters who have lots of potential. For us, though, country or creed does not matter, and we thought to ourselves - we have the whole of Europe to play with - why squander the tremendous talent already out there?
Michelle: talking of your talent, you have signed girls who are as you
put it internet personalities, do you feel they bring something
different to other celebs, as you seem to have cornered the market on
this group of talent that others seem afraid to try?
Sirens: Oh, definitely. There's still a certain prejudice against these... new wave of celebrities, but celebrities they are. They are arguably some of the most popular and well-known personalities out there in this modern age (or they have the potential to be). Don't get me wrong - I don't consider them naturally 'better' fighters by any metrics. What I'm arguing for is for the fact that the Internet has enabled these fighters to be more easily discovered, and we should therefore not ignore this newfound talent pool - one that is only going to continue growing and growing henceforth. Furthermore, one may also argue that in this day and age especially, anyone really can be considered an 'Internet personality' and hence there really is no distinction between old and new. The 'old guard' like Mandy Moore and Laura Vandervoort (who will be challenging some VIX fighters in November) are also social media users and have utilised these tools to stay relevant in this climate of abundant talent.
Michelle: The other market you have mined is the models, do you feel
their training to keep in shape gives them an edge over other celebs
or did you just sign the girls you found with the best abilities for
the job?
Sirens: *laugh* I see that you have been talking to Girls Friday. What can I say? Most definitely? Many do not realise that models (fashion, swimsuit or fitness etc.), I would argue, are one of the fittest human beings on the planet, only falling short of pure athletes. Their entire job is to stay thin, whilst actresses, singers and other personalities often change their body shapes as they progress in their careers, whether due to the demands of the job or other reasons. Have you ever seen a fat/flabby model? Whereas I have seen countless numbers of out-of-shape actresses (sorry, actresses... you guys are still wonderful people).
Michelle: Of your fighters, Pia Miller and Melissa Satta are the only
two with actual fight experience, will you be expecting both to act as
the locker room leaders to give the girls an expectation of what the
BBU entails or do you want all your girls to be equal?
Sirens: Hmm, an interesting question. While Pia and Melissa do have some fight experience, we do not want to discount our girls who already have some fight experience in other contact sports, like Mathilde Gohler and Petra Nemcova, who have dabbled in the world of MMA before, and not to mention most of the girls who have some form of kick-boxing/muay thai training (albeit only confined to the gym). Lastly, we have also hired the services of Head Trainer(s) Pietro Boselli (www.listal.com/pietro-boselli < www.listal.com/pietro-boselli >) and Lucas Medeiros (www.listal.com/lucas-medeiros < www.listal.com/lucas-medeiros >), who are Italian and Brazilian natives respectively, and who have extensive experience in the combat sports of Boxing and Judo.
Michelle: on my previous point, you have signed many bigger weight
girls, do you think they can coexist as there is only so much that can
around title wise, or is Diana Korkunova going to be watching her
stablemates fight it out in the gym and in official fights?
Sirens: Heh. If you have been following our VIX fights, you know that we actively condone intra-stable rivalries. We believe that competition brings out the best in our girls, and while I sincerely see every single one of them as having the potential to win the gold one day, how they get there will be over the heads of their peers as well, which will just prove that the champion deserves to be at the top. Nonetheless, we have tried to strategise the fact that yes, while Diana is alone in her weight division, most of our other fighters straddle two (or more) weight-classes. So I have no doubt that we will be actively competing for ALL titles at some point in the future, but especially in the Light/Welter/JMD divisions.
Michelle: with a JMD title and JMDD title coming to the BBU, are they
two divisions you want to have a strike at with these talented girls
or are you a traditional type manager, who wants to stick with the
classic linear belts?
Sirens: Far from it - one reason why I decided to join the BBU was because of the newly-created JMD and JMDD divisions. In fact, my only regret was not joining sooner *laughs*, as my girls are now excluded from the recently announced JMD tournament. Going further, I hope that the BBU can be a place of even more divisions and titles. My girls, especially, have shown an interest in AHW bouts (or Apartment House Wrestling matches), which are a mix of catfighting/wrestling thrown into unconventional settings such as the bedroom or the beach. Who knows? If it becomes popular enough, we could even have a new title and belt for that kind of fight.
Michelle: Finally, I will understand if you don't answer this but do
you have a favourite among your girls?
Sirens: Call it a managerial, protectionist instinct, but I do have a soft-spot for Diana, since she is (and looks like) the baby of the group. I do mean it in an affectionate way of course, not wanting her to have a lack of opportunities and also wanting to make sure she can succeed on an equal level as the other girls. Of course, I've seen her fight, and let me just say that she's far from a demure pussycat. With a background in Traditional Kazakhstani Wrestling, I'd bet she'll have some choice 'words' for me once she reads this interview heh.
Michelle: thank you for your time, I know that I and I bet our BBU
viewers will be rooting for you to succeed in this new organization
for you, just remember that you or your girls are always welcome here
for an interview with yours truly.
Sirens: Again, I look forward to the rest of you getting to know the Sirens over time, and we are of course grateful for the hospitality and future, potential fights.
