We kick off tonight's pay per view with an interesting clash of arguably two different worlds meeting. On one side of the ring stands Japanese pro wrestler Maki Itoh. Across the ring from her is the debuting American actress Jena Frumes. The New Jersey born and bred Jena hoping to start off her career in a big way.
The build up to the bout saw both women post on their social media account. Maki posted on hers "I can't wait to go see my simps in Cardiff. I don't know who the hell Jena is but my agent tells me she does social media and acts. I beat bytches like that in wrestling all the time. Respect Maki!" With the following image.
Jena posted on her own account "I've been looking for my chance to leave the amateur ranks and go pro for a while. Time to make my statement for the world to see!" With Jena posting her own picture too.
Fight night. In her traditional style Maki comes out singing her theme song with the crowd joining in. Maki all smiles as she walks down the aisle with her switching hands cupping her ears. Once at ringside she hands the microphone off before sliding into the ring under the ropes. Maki gets on her red gloves with black thumbs to go alongside her red sports bra, half black and half red skirt over a thong. Red boots with black trim and her hair in pigtails. She taps her gloves together as she bounces on her toes.
Here comes Jena; who rolls her eyes clearly at the display by her opponent. She flexes her arms at ringside to show off to her opponent as Maki jokingly waves to her. She steps into the ring and nods to her coach as they tell her this is her chance to shine.
The fighters jog to the center of the ring. Jena looking the more serious fighter as Maki plays with her pigtails with a big grin. When they are touch to touch gloves, Maki gets her gloves smacked downwards by Jena. Maki's demeanor changes as she says "f**k you" to Jena. They walk back to their corners with the both fighters ready. The bell rings to start 10 rounds of flyweight action.
Round 1:
Out the fighters come staring right through their opponent. Exchanging stiff jabs as Jena looks to use her footwork to create angles to strike from. Maki more upright throwing some of her own punches towards the chest of Jena. Near the end of the opening minute; Jena leans out the way of a left cross and counters with a straight into the lips of Maki to make her take a step back.
Jena crowds Maki now as she drives her to the ropes. Working the body of Maki with hooks till the Japanese star can hold onto her. Referee splits them up with Jena keeping Maki herded towards the ropes as they box around the outside part of the ring. It's Frumes who is landing the more punches between them as she holds the center of the ring.
Late in the round; Maki dips under a straight and whacks in two left hooks to the body. Nearly headbutting Jena as she moves inside the reach of her foe. Jena being forced into a firefight in the final ten seconds as cracks of leather on flesh ring out. The bell dings to end the round with Jena looking comfortable for her first ever round of boxing. Maki meanwhile being told where she went wrong, she pouts all the while.
Round 2:
Back at it they go with more venom to their punches. Jena gets clocked with a left hook across her chin to turn her head. Maki giving her some pay back for the last round as she drives back Jena towards the ropes. Maki working with hooks over the top unlike Jena though. With the American shoving her off and moving back into space.
Before Maki can get too gung ho; Jena lands a double jab into the face of Maki to stop her in her tracks. Both are landing more as they are opening up their elbows to strike. Crowd roaring both girls on as Jena looks to have the crisper technique but she is getting caught with some hard shots back across her face as Maki shows her toughness to stick in the pocket when she gets inside.
An uppercut catches Jena after she gets her right cross deflected. Back goes Jena onto her heels as Maki forces her into a neutral corner. Frumes is covering up as the seconds tick away, Maki looking to break her apart as she switches targets. At the end of the round Maki has an almost devilish grin to her face as she walks back to her corner. While Jena gets to see what the other side of boxing is like when things don't go to plan.
Round 3:
Doubling up her jab more as she dances on her toes, Jena looking to not be drawn into a slugging contest. Maki looking annoyed that she is being forced to box on the outside, mood not helped by her bottom lip being busted open. With Jena showing at range she looks in good shape.
Issue is Maki finds her way in after slipping a jab, she lands a right hook to the ribs of Jena, followed by an overhand left to her jaw. Jena is pressed back against the ropes as Maki gleefully works the torso of the social media star. Jena pushes her off again and catches Maki with a left cross to the delight of her fans.
Maki finds herself knocked back to the opposite set of ropes. Trying to soak up the pressure coming her way on her arms and gloves. Jena though looks on a mission as she targets the abs and torso of Itoh, seeing the successes Asuka Kuramochi had against Maki last time the wrestler was in a ring was to work the body. Maki grabs hold of Jena and can be seen insulting her.
The bell rings not long after they are broken up. Jena tapping her gloves together as she jogs to her corner. Maki meanwhile shakes her head and needs a talking too by her coach as they are not too pleased with her getting caught out.
Round 4:
Out they come with Jena looking to keep the fight at her range. Doubling that jab up nicely but just missing with her big hooks as Maki moves back out of range. Maybe getting too keen as she sees an opportunity to press Maki into a corner, Jena swings in a big right hook that finds thin air as Maki ducks under it and moves around Jena. A right hook pops Jena on her chin to rock her onto her heels!
Maki coming in hot now as she unloads on Jena, who is fighting to match the intensity coming her way. Jena can't hear her coach telling her to retreat and reset, instead she is being knocked around by Maki. RIGHT HOOK TO THE CHIN OF FRUMES SENDS HER DOWN TO HER BACK!
Jena's left eye has a cut above it as Maki poses with her arms in the air and jumps for joy, the referee needing to remind her to go to the neutral corner. 1....2....3... Jena groans as she lays spread eagle. 4....5....6... She slowly starts to stir as as rolls to her right side. 7....8... Jena doesn't move much more. 9....10 that's it! Jena Frumes is counted out!
Winner Maki Itoh KO Round 4
After:
"Maki!" Chants ring out as she mounts the bottom ropes of the neutral corner she is in with a bubbly smile. Arms in the air above her head as she basis in her fans cheers. Afterwards jogging back to her corner to a rye smile from her coach, far from flawless but a great finish by Maki once she had Jena hurt.
With Jena needing to her helped to her knees. Thankfully for her fans she seems ok after getting a drink. Jena apologies to her coach for wasting their time training her but they quickly shut that down. Still Jena looks gutted as she stares at Maki, shaking her head that she lost to someone like Maki who doesn't seem to take much serious.
Helped out the ring by her coach after her gloves are taken off. Jena at least knows now that it isn't so easy to step up to this level. She showed moments of her skill set so we might see her again. It obviously depends on how she takes this first bitter taste of defeat.
Inside the ring Maki gets her left arm raised in victory, giving the middle finger with her right hand to the nearest camera. Maki asks for a microphone so she can thank the fans for their support. Maki always seems genuinely surprised by how people from other countries take to her outward personality.
Still she has some learning to do in the ring as her coach tells her that she can have the weekend off but she is back in on Monday. Maki nods enthusiastically as they leave the ring. Maki giving out high fives to some in the front row. Showing that she will always be a show woman at heart.
