SIRENs IV: Atlantis review:
Another Siren's card has come and with the Real View being about the BBU PPV on Sunday, I felt that this amazing card deserved the recognition it deserves and here is my review of the event.
The card took on the island of St.Helena; just off the coast of the Ivory Coast, a first for the BBU as the organization continues to spread it's influence around the world, 5 bouts were on the card, so let's begin.
Mathilde Goehler vs Martha Hunt:
With the welterweight division growing, it's great to see the start of a new fighters career like Martha's, a Victoria Secret Angel who surprisingly hasn't been picked up in the BBU before, she has a boxing background in her workout, but this is the first time she stepped into a ring.
Her opponent Mathilde has had a mixed career up to now, winning two coming into this fight, she lost her debut to Nina Agdal, but has won her last two against Federica Nargi and Ann-Katherin Brommel.
So this was always going to be a test for Martha to begin her own career with a win, but she started the fight strong, using a jabbing attack to surprise Mathilde, the Dane not looking so great.
Both fighters were getting heated as the Mathilde was getting frustrated as she couldn't do anything with her rookie opponent.
Martha even knocked down Mathilde in round 4, but she couldn't build on it, showing her lack of experience, while Goehler showed a killed instinct that Hunt lacks it seems.
Mathilde battering her opponent to the ropes in round 5, before putting her down, the as Martha bravely fought on, Mathilde finished her off in round 6.
The victor though wasn't happy at being dominated by a rookie, kneeling over Martha and slapping her till Martha was able to fight back somewhat, the beginning of a long rivalry it seems.
But for Mathilde it begs the question, has she the talent of her stablemates as this wasn't the performance she needs to step out the shadow of say a Petra Nemcova.
While with Martha signing into the BBU, I wonder if her best friend Elsa Hosk with be turning up in the BBU, her sparring partner we hear.
Martha and Elsa sparring:
Pia Miller vs Been Rodriguez:
Two stunning South Americans doing battle, you can't really ask for more; as Chile vs Argentina in something resembling the Copa America final.
Both women seemed to be friendly, probably having some experience of meeting each other at photoshoots and that's something that can go either way, either leading to a knockout brawl or both holding back.
Pia came into this fight with a 2 and 2 record compared to the unbeaten Belen, who has real power in her hands from what I've seen.
While I don't think Belen was holding back, Pia started off the much stronger, keeping her Argentinian opponent behind her guard so she couldn't unload her power.
But Belen showed why she is dangerous, getting pinned on the ropes, yet she fought her way off with her power punching and suddenly she was the one on the front foot.
Pia regretting clearly not keeping Belen under her thumb, the look on her face told the story as she looked stunned.
But she got back onto the front foot and could the unbeaten run be over? That honestly ran across the minds of me and my fellow reporters.
Pia though couldn't stay in control, soon she was taking bombs and down she went, though she showed courage to get up twice from being put down, the referee did what Henry in her corner should have done and stopped the fight.
Though admittedly I don't blame him when Pia is hot tempered, though that doesn't give her a right to sneak attack the winner, it doesn't win many fans.
Pia is in a funny position, I think she does have talent but I guess the reputation from the Home & Away set is true, she acts like a spoiled brat when things don't go her way and if she manages that temper, then she'd be a more complete fighter.
While Belen could have a very bright future, of the two; she's the one with the weapons to go far and maybe bigger fights are on the horizon after this result.
Hailey Clauson vs Bridget Malcolm
So for anyone who has followed my reviews in the past, I've not been a big fan of the match making of the Siren's concerning this blonde bombshell Hailey.
But while she was upset after her heroic performance against Kelly Gale a month ago, where she nearly beat the highly rated fellow youngster, Hailey needs to win a few fights before she tries fighting the sharks at the top level.
Bridget was a debutante, but she fit the mould of girls the Siren's bring to the BBU, super fit models with some boxing experience, Bridget having boxing training like Martha Hunt and is a fellow Victoria Secret girl.
Hailey though wasn't impressed by her opponent and it almost cost her from the bell as Bridget showed she is here to fight, both girls brawling early on in a hard exchange of punches.
To her credit though; Hailey pounded Bridget back and the rookie quickly learned that you do not rush straight up the centre to take down a girl like Clauson.
But Bridget couldn't sustain any momentum, Hailey would smash her up the centre to stop her when she was on a roll.
By round 4, Bridget's face was swollen and Hailey put her down, only for the rookie to show her toughness by getting up, though that was short lived as Hailey beat Bridget to the ropes and the referee saved the Aussie from more punishment.
Hailey warned after the fight that anyone questioning her would face her wrath, well sorry to burst her bubble but she isn't a top fighter yet, not to sat she won't be as we like her a lot.
But if she thinks that beating newcomers and failing to beat the girls further up the pecking order is impressing people, she needs to look in the mirror.
One or two more tune ups maybe needed and as this fight showed, she may want to stick to the welterweight scene, she has speed here and isn't drained down to make the weight at lightweight, meaning her punches have more sting to them, just a suggestion like everything else.
For Bridget, I hope we get to see her again, the BBU seems to be the place where models are thriving, especially at these bigger weights, with the right push behind her, Bridget could maybe surprise some, but this performance wasn't a great one, so maybe I'm just being hopeful for her.
Petra Nemcova vs Amy Willerton
By far Petra has been the stand out at the Siren's, to think she's 38 but has came to the BBU with a real mission to succeed and as her unbeaten record showed, she is being successful.
Her opponent Amy meanwhile has been a mixed bag, 2 and 2 in her own career, though she beat Petra's stablemate Danielle Robertson, which was what set this fight up, maybe Petra is secretly the enforcer of the Siren's?
This being the first time I can think of that Petra has faced a girl under 30 and it showed as Amy started the quicker off the gates.
But as round 2 showed, Amy has several deficiencies with her skills, that's the problem with being a free agent and in Amy's case, not having that fight training background to come into boxing with.
Petra finally by round 3 had found her target, catching Amy with a real power shot and knocking the youngster around the ring.
Though Amy did try to make a fight of it after that, but ended up eating a hooking combo that put down the English beauty pageant winner for the count in round 4.
To Petra's credit, unlike her unruly young stablemates and Pia, she knows something called respect, which she showed Amy, deservedly so as she was outgunned but still gave the victor a hard fight.
It's funny though, the Siren's management seem to be matching Petra up with the right girls in my opinion as she started with girls her own age that frankly are on a downward slide and she fought a youngster who could give her some problems, nothing to really worry her though.
I'll have to ask if I get to interview the Sirens manager if Petra has a hand in picking her opposition, as hers has frankly been flawless, though after maybe one more tune up, she should be looking to girls like Tamara Ecclestone and Elisabetta Gregoraci or maybe a Belen Rodriguez, as each is a big hitter like herself.
Amy needs to tighten her defence up, she had the speed advantage here but she was caught way too easily, that's the difference between her being a top fighter and one whose going to be stuck at the bottom end of the rankings.
Main Event: Diana Korkunova vs Lily Rose Deep:
Diana is one of my favourite new fighters, a girl I've said would have a big year and judging how she beat Cher Lloyd in her last fight, I'd say my prediction is on track.
But her picking the freshly turned 18 Lily Rose was an odd choice, maybe it was a birthday present to Lily whose birthday was last Saturday.
Lily physically doesn't look a threat to anyone to be frank, clearly the Sirens management sees something in Lily to put her as the main event over an Amy Willerton vs Petra Nemcova.
As the fight started, we got to see what Lily brings to the table; pure speed, with Diana struggling to catch her, which says something as she's one of the quickest flyweights I've seen in my time here.
The first 4 rounds shockingly went to Lily, though I have to say I never thought that Diana was in trouble of being put down, Lily's punches looking like they may sting but no knockout power I could see.
Lily though instead of banking on her speed and stamina to win on points, stupidly went for the kill and while at first it looked like she'd get away with it.
When round 6 come around, Diana just pounded Lily into a mess, the wiry framed youngster couldn't take the hits and by the end of that round she was clearly in trouble, which is worrying as that was the first time Diana got her fists onto the youngster.
By round 7 an uppercut looked to nearly kill Lily judging by Diana's reaction, though I have to give it to Lily, she forced her way back up, as it turned out twice, but she was clearly out of it and mercifully the referee stopped it, though why Lily's didn't I don't know and question how good a corner crew they were.
Diana showed why we also love her as she stayed to check on her beaten opponent, though it looked more like a big sister after kicking her little sisters arse showing guilt for doing it in part.
As much as I will get stick for this as Lily fought courageously, she never was a threat if we are being honest, as soon as she got hit cleanly, she was in massive trouble and in the big leagues you come prepared physically as well as skill wise.
hopefully Lily does come back, but when she's filled out more as she clearly had the skills part down, though as the fifth round showed, she didn't have the patience to keep to what was working.
For Diana, honestly this was lose/lose in my eyes, if she lost which she was heading for, it would have been the upset of the year.
Even now as she's won, it hasn't done anything for her, hopefully this was just a detour to give Lily a birthday gift that she certainly will remember, because Cher Lloyd must have been screaming at the TV watching her conquer almost get humiliated.
There's plenty of sharks who will be gunning for Diana now and I'll be keen to see how she handles them in the coming months.
